Turn Your Computer into an Underwater Exploration Machine

The ocean is full of exotic plants and mysterious creatures, underwater mountain ranges and thermal vents. It has ignited the human imagination throughout history.

For those interested in this watery world, a new online resource offers free access to the latest marine science news and resources. EurekAlert! -- the editorially independent science news Web site of AAAS, the science society -- recently launched a new marine science portal, www.EurekAlert.org/marinescience.

The world's leading research organizations and journals provide the material on the Web site. Visitors will find press releases about breaking news, a multimedia gallery, a calendar of upcoming events and links to marine resources.

"EurekAlert! was originally created as a resource for science reporters in search of ideas and background information for news stories," says Cathy O'Malley, Project Director. "Over time, we found that EurekAlert! was gaining popularity among several other groups -- including students, teachers, scientists and consumers interested in timely and credible science, health and technology news.”

The information on EurekAlert! is based on peer-reviewed research, and new information is added daily. "The 40 -50 stories posted on EurekAlert! each day come from the world's leading universities, research institutes, government agencies and other research sources," adds O'Malley.

More than 4,800 journalists from 50 countries have registered as users of EurekAlert!, gaining instant access to new research. The Web site also attracts half a million non-media visitors per month, including high school and college students researching projects, teachers looking for educational material and ideas, and general consumers. The site is free to the public.

Topics recently featured on the site range from endangered turtles to newly discovered changes in the deep sea, and the shrimp industry in the Gulf of Mexico. With information from 500 research organizations worldwide, the Web site offers an "ocean" of information on marine issues.
